I can't get my 1988 pickup out of 4wd

Hello all,

So I need some help. I got a 1988 Toyota pickup 4wd when I moved to Colorado from Florida for the snow. It was snowing last night. So I wanted to put it 4wd for the morning. I turned the lugs, and then put in 4 high and the light came on.

This morning as I was driving I realized that it was just water and didn’t need 4wd. So I went to a parking lot and turned the lugs and couldn’t get it out of 4wd drive. The light would not come off and when I was drive it was grinding

So when I want to change it from 4wd…Should I put the transfer case from four high to neutral then change the lugs and then put it at 2 high?

That sounds about right. There's strain on the axles while in gear, so go to neutral on the shifter and 4wd, (chock the wheels) and try turning it then.

Take the shifter out of 4wd before unlocking the hubs. You may need to move back and forth a few inches to release the tension in the Transfer Case.
