I just joined the ranks but thought i would show off my newest acquisition to everyone. The truck is stamped June of 1977, but the title says 1979, probably due to the conversion.





Only two relatively small problems i have run into so far, the transmission squeals when you step on the clutch, assuming a worn throw out bearing, its an L43 Transmission, no surprise. The other issue is a timing chain tensioner that has blown out, resulting in this:







From the look of it i am going to have my work cut out for me.

Yeah, I've been keeping my eye out for one of those. They've been coming up on craigslist lately, but I just haven't been able to justify buying one yet.

Actually i read the build thread a while ago for the brown one you posted, all the hard work on it was going into doing the custom interior.

No v6 for me, this little 4 is geared so low that i dont really need it. Even with the fouled timing she would pull 70 on the freeway without much complaint. Also she has made it cross country once already with me, fully loaded and pulling a car on a dolly. (that trip my GVW was well over 9K, i was tripping sensors on the turnpikes making them think that i was a commercial vehicle.)

One modification that is taking place while i am working out the timing is all of the emissions related equipment is coming off, and i mean all of it. Because the title is marked as 1979 Chinook had to pile on all kinds of aftermarket emissions equipment. the spaghetti lines on this thing looked closer to the 22r than the 20r.

 

the 7mgte is an i6, but yea i dont think you'll need it. maybe just a cam and some headers on the 22r

 

Thats the catch, this is a 20r. no where near as much aftermarket equipment for it. And up here in Mass, the 22r blocks are far and few between when looking used.

 

ahh damn. well it seems none of my ideas are helping ya I would think that a 22r would drop right in...but if your 20r will do 70 and reasonable rpms, idk if id touch it.

 

I'm looking for an aluminum 20r engine head, specifically in Atlanta, anyone know where to find something like that? Couldn't find one on the internet... thanks!

 

ATLien: LCEngeneering is where I would go, they seem to have the best equipment for our trucks.

Also she is all back together again, sort of. After sealing a few hidden cracks in the plate on the bottom of my intake manifold. I also wound up bypassing the heater core because it was plugged solid.

Now for the next challenge, the fuel pump on this truck was converted over to a vacuum operated model which ran off the air pump. Now that all the emissions equipment has been pulled off I don't have enough vacuum to run the pump. I was thinking of picking up an in line electric pump, what kind of pressure do I need for the stock carb?

Sorry about no updates. we have it mostly back together again. New water Pump, New Timing Chain Tensioner, and the De-Smog is 99% Complete.

I say 99% because that bloody reed valve on the back of the motor doesn't want to come off, and i don't want to risk snapping off a bolt. in the mean time it has a short hose connected to it that is capped off, making it useless.

One bug we came across during the re-assembly, there is a plate on the bottom side of the intake manifold, it covers a coolant path for the choke, and it sprung a leak. Toyota and the Aftermarket no longer make the gasket for this plate, and no matter how many times i keep attempting to patch it with RTV, it still wants to leak.

Now that the cold weather is upon us i have decided to put it away for the winter. My wife keeps asking me to sell it since its not a driver at the moment :/
