Questions regarding towing and 32" tires

Hi,
I am looking into possibly purchasing a 1999-2000 4Runner Limited. My plans on using the vehicle as a daily driver with some mild off road use. I also need to be able to tow a 2800# car and a 1200# trailer every 3 months or so.

So my questions are, can the 4Runner tow 4000# plus 2 adults and about 300 pounds in gear 160 miles without issue? I did some searching and it seems that it might be a bit much for a 3rd gen even with a tranny cooler and not using OD. But I could never find a real clear answer. Any opinions or facts on this? If this is with in the 4Runners ability would 32" tires have much affect on towing? I also searched around for with this and found that threads abut 33"s and much less weight.

Thanks for the help,

The larger tires give you less power, but getting matching gears could bring that into a better range. The 4runner is rated to tow 5000#, so 4000# should be ok. I don't know if I'd do it, but toyota seems to think so. Definitely go with a big tranny cooler and bypass the stock one (look up strawberry milkshake on here). You definitely won't win any races.

As long as you have trailer brakes and are smart about it, it shouldn't be a problem.

I've towed that much and more pretty frequently the last several years and I'm running 265/75s (essentially 32" tires).

I also have a 5-speed and use a weight distributing hitch, which makes a HUGE difference in how it all rides.

As far as the automatic trans, I have no idea. That would make me a bit more worried about it, but from what I've seen the aux cooler should do the job.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out this thread...

Thanks for the advice Matt98 and Jburt.

Matt98 its funny you post that photo because the car I want to tow is an 87 325is.

Is added weigh from a roof rack and Bumpers something that should concern me?
