1986 Toyota 4x4 SR5 Xtra Cab Restoration Questions

Hey everyone,

I am new to the fanaticism of Toyota MANIA and I love it! I have a few questions that I am hoping some of you knowledgeable veterans can answer for me.

1) Can someone post a picture of what came in the back of an extra cab for a 1986 Toyota SR5 4x4? When I bought mine there is nothing back there. Was it a shelf? Fold down seats? I want to find the parts to restore it but I can't find anywhere on the Internet what was back there in the first place.

2) I bought two "SR5" vertigo stitched bucket seats from a guy on Craig's List from an 1985 SR5 4Runner. The drivers side fits in just fine but the passenger side back bolt is located in a different spot. I thought the 4Runner parts and truck parts are, for the most part, interchangeable? Also, any ideas on how to fix it so I can get that seat bolted in as well?

Thanks for your help!

the passenger side seat is different because of getting in and out for passengers, make a bracet for the different bolt location, as far as stuff in the xtra cab all the ones ivwe seen are just mainly a small shelf for storage with some netting on the side for holding things, ive never seen any seats back there until 89 and up

Mine just had a crappy little shelf across the back. After a few months of carrying my tools and recovery gear, it collapsed on itself. My solution was to build a new one:

Thanks gents. That makes more sense. "Annoyingrob" is that console I see factory? Mine came with a console but it's missing a lid and I have been trying to find what a factory console looked like because I'm not even sure if what I have is or isn't.

Thanks Matstaley! I have been trying to find a lid forever for my SR5 center console (or just an entire new console if it comes with a lid). No luck though. So if there is anyone out there who is selling an 84-88 SR5 center console lid then I will pay very well

Question 1986 sr5 xtra cab restoration dilemma

I've had my Yota for 24 years; engine rebuild at 179K miles, truck now has 211K miles. I have a record of every single thing that's been done to it since 1990, have had ALL scheduled service and oil changes done, and the engine is in tip top shape. Even the bushings have been replaced. Sadly, the rust is consuming the bed and a little rust has appeared on the cab. I'm considering having the truck restored but it will be pricey as I can't do any of this type of work.

I have my eye on a 1999 V6 TRD Tacoma with 153K miles on it, very pristine condition visually and engine appears to run perfectly. It does have a new timing belt. However, I don't know if all the scheduled service has been done on it, if wheel bearings, water pump, head gasket, etc. may be in the near future.

Therein lies the dilemma. My 1986 would be a perfect project for someone who can do the needed body work. I'm looking at a $7K restoration to pay a body shop to do it. The 1999 SR5 is worth about $9150. What would you do? Thanks for your input.
