1st Gen Radio Options

I was wondering what every one did for a radio in there 1st gens? I recently built a center dash bezel to replace my broken one, I installed the HVAC controls back as far to the driver side as I could and there still is no room for a "modern radio in the dash!...what did you all do to install one.

i am thinking of mounting under the dash where the oil pressure and volt gauges are mounted.
I will pick up a multipin connector so I can pop it in and out.
I would be pissed if it gets ripped off (if I forget to remove it) but at least they won't destroy my dash..

I run a Kenwood 3006 head unit with a 4 channel amp, 10 disc remote changer and 4 -3 way speakers. The radio unit bolted in with just a little modifications required to the stock dash radio shaft openings.

I thought about mounting mine under the vents also but when I stuck it down there to size it up is stuck out toward the shifter about 2" and I didnt like that.

Suncomb1 how wide is that unit? I dont care about hacking up the inside of the dash I just need it to mount between HVAC controls and the end of the plate/bezel but I never even thought of going back to a cassett player!

Bigdaddy I plan on looking at that option but I dont think there will be room for my pistol if I do that!!!!!

I wondered why somebody had to hack my dash to fit that Sony Xplode in my truck. I thought they were just assholes, but now I know it wouldn't fit. It still seems like he/they could have done a cleaner job.

I'm done with cd players in rigs, especially pickups. I only want radio and the ability to plug in memory sticks or .mp3 players. The radio I'm putting in my '58 Chevy is like that. Too bad I'm so far from getting that done!

Huh? The '81 I recently bought has a plain ol' DIN-sized headunit installed, doesn't seem to have any problems fitting right next to the ashtray.

Their is room, you just have to get creative, IIRC when I built mine, I put the HVAC flush with the top, and this gave me enough room for a DIN unit underneath it. Check out this thread on Pirate for more ideas

I have a cdx 9900 sony in mine. It was a free radio so I made it fit. It took some cutting on the bezel and a little bit on the dash but it turned out to be a fairly clean install

yeah I should have slid my controls all the way up also but its to late now I dont want to have to build another one....LOL....this one is the second one I built....I am running out of aluminum.

I was thinking about face mounting my CB in the dash and mounting the mic connection to the bezel also and the speaker up in the factory dash speaker location...and then just putting the FM/CD in the glove box....man I will only have like 4" of glove box left.

Does any one know if a radio remote will work through the glove box door?

Bigdady we are pretty lucky here in Mo. with the gun rights. Not to much flack over guns here unlike the B.S. down there after that T. Martin case. We can get away with almost any thing here SEMO. mostley all you see is shot guns or rifles in the back glass I have seen a few Ak's and Ar's in the back glass but pistols draw attention for some reason.

Yea you can have one in the truck but its got to be in a glove box or something. I pesonally just hide mine in or under the seat. I have been stopped before with the gun in my truck. Cop didnt ask and i didnt tell. I on the other hand would not want to be a cop and have to deal with all the crazies out there these days.
