Hey guys, I recently installed an aussie locker in my rear diff and its great, but I am wondering about long term reliabilty of these things. This might help others decide if a lunchbox is right for them. Also, if they do fail, what happens. Pop Crunch and then no go? Please post locker brand, mileage and tire size. So far I've got just under 1000 miles on my Aussie with 31's

 

I would say that most failures are caused by driver error or by being setup incorrectly.

 

I have a Yukon grizzly and about 1500 miles 31's and hadn't issues besides an occasional buck and kick here and there. Not sure how they can be set up incorrectly I guess mayby installed incorrectly? Can you explain your thoughts on this bemiceelf.

 

With 31 inch tires, it will probably last forever, most people have issues when running tires much larger than that.

 

you can mess up any install. ahah for lunchbox lockers some have spacers that are directional. that could mess it up. i had a lockrite i got used for cheap it did work because it was to worn down, not sure how used it was but it definitly didnt work
i put about 5 thousand on my spartin locker before i sold it and it had no problems.

anything can last a longtime with proper maintance

 

I don't have any experience in any of my trucks with lunchboxes, but I did have a friend in college with a lockrite in a '87. It was rather funny with him though. In a two month semester, he went through no less that 4 lockrites. We installed the first one, then had a side gear fracture in a week, pulled the third memeber at school, had another shipped expedited as a warranty, broke it within 3 days of install in the same fashion as the first, again, called and had it warrantied. Broke the center section on #3, called, and were refused warranty, but he was sold #4 at 50%, and then broke that one within a week. The truck was by no means a power house, and truth be told, he did abuse it a little. It was turning a set of "33's, and pushing the truck as hard as he could that killed them. Like people have said, as long as you are nice, they'll probably last a while. IMHO, I'd just spend the extra money on a full carrier locker or LSD. I couldn't be happier with my true-trac. I've had it in for nearly 3k now and haven't had any issues. We'll see how it does 10 and 20k out.

 

That is what I meant by being installed incorrectly.

When I put in my Aussie, there was a lot more than just putting it in there and expecting it work correctly. You have to pay attention to other things also. At least for me.

 

Lockrights front and rear in my Tacoma. Running 35's for the last 1.5 years and before that 33's.
No issues whatsoever.

i've had a aussie locker in the rear of my rig for over 40k miles. Its been ran with 31's all the way up to 39.5's. It still functions fine but it does pop a bit more then it used to while wheeling. The teeth are probably starting to round off a bit. Its lasted far longer then i ever thought it would.

 

Ive never had any issues with my full spool.

 

Aussie locker, 5.29.. 30k miles mostly now 70mph freeway.. beat it in the mountains..

37" MTR's... recently took the third out to replace my gear set with Yukons. Aussie looks as new as it did 3 years ago when I installed it. No wear of the teeth whatsoever not even a scratch.

I've heard similar stories of LocRites wearing and cracking. Aussie is the best IMO and IME!

Just ordered one for my front axle to replace my Detroit TruTrac!

 

Lockright rear, Aussie front, at least 20K hard miles of DD, and wheeling Hollister hills, Rubicon, TDS, Truck haven, and lots a local trails. 4.88's on 35's

 

My buddy has a spartain locker in his toyota truck and wheels it hard, and drives daily with 37's and it still works fine with his stock gearing (whatever it is usually for the 4 cyl)
