33x10.50x15 or 285/75/16

I'm thinking of going to 33's. I have 15" wheels now with 32x11.50x15's. I'm debating over whether to buy 16" wheels and go with 285's or just get 33x10.50's for my current wheels.

I just wanted to hear everyone's opinion on each option. I'm leaning more towards the 33x10.50's now b/c it is easier and cheaper and there will be no issue with rubbage on the a-arm.

I have 285's now on my Z-71 and they are super heavy, it seems like a lighter 33x10.50 might be a little better, even though it is slightly shorter and narrower.

So, opinions?

I would go wider...I have 10.50's right now and I am DIEING to go wider, just seems like you would get more traction and I'm not sure how a 10.50 33" tire would look...I dunno, I'm just blabberin.

I would go wider though...wasn't it an old Pontiac advertisement, "Wider is Better"

off roading and in deep snow you would get better traction, but on the road, a narrower tire is better. Granted, a wider tire looks better for sure, but as far as practicality, the narrower tire is the better choice.

Thats true...for me, I do an even amount of on-road and off-road driving since I live on 15 acres and a dirt road so...I guess in his situation..."Narrower is Better"

I would stay with the 15". If you check the prices 16" are usually $10-$20 more per tire on top of the new rims you would have to buy.

I have "5" BFG KM MT's I will be getting rid of in a couple of months. Four of the tires have 4000 miles the other is a new spare. I will be upgrading to 35's with my SAS. Let me know if you are interested. Check em out.

Very true and I would go with more factory wheels b/c I like the way they look-so then I would have rubbage issues on the a-arm. I can get 33x10.50x15 BFG MT KM's for about $135 each, where the only 285 I can get for that price is a Mud King (have these on my Z-71, great in mud, not sure about rocks). A 285 BFG MT KM is about $185, ouch! Of course I would have to sell my current tires, 4 Bridgestone Dueler MT's (32x11.50x15) with about 70% tread left and one new BFG AT KO (32x11.50).

I had 32's before I changed gears, but now with the 4.30's and a 5spd, I run about 3150 rpm at 78 mph, I would like to lower that rpm number a tad, 33's should do that.

Are they cupped, chunked? Patches, plugs? How much for just the tires?

I have 33x10.50 BFG AT kos and like them a lot. That was an upgrade from some small metric size that came on the 4RUNNER when I got it. It is the 31x10.50 tire package but the guy must have been strapped for cash. Anyway, I love those tires. For the off-roading and snow driving I do the ability to dig down to the "terra firmer" Is better than floatation. I perfer the looks of a 33x12.50 but mine are cheeper and work great for me and as stated, are better street tires. (Just gotta look out for those bottemless midwestern mud pits) Also, nearly all the cool off-road wheels are a 15'' size. It is up to you but I would get the 33x10.50s and save up for some other things. Afterall, if you think you made the wrong choice, tires wear out and you can get new ones.

The tires are great. No plugs or patches. Not cupped, but have some off-road rash. $300 for all five. I am planning on 35" MTR's, but really want the Krawlers.

Who's got a pic from the front of the vehicle (or back) of the 33x10.50's?

That's a good looking white pickup by the way.

Yeah, I've seen yours before. How do you like them? Wish you had gotten 285's? Do you have a pic from straight on or directly from the back?

If you are considering buying new wheels so you can run 285s, have you given any thought to buying new wheels and running 33/12.5-15s? You'll need to get the correct back spacing to push the tires away from the a-arms, but...

This is what I'm hoping to do in the spring.
