I have a 92 22re pickup that I bought 4th hand a number of years ago. The last guy wanted to set the truck up as a rock crawler so it has many mystery mod's done to it. There's at least two switches that I have no clue as to their function.

Though some complex math I've figured out I have a rear differential ratio of 5.6. makes it great when Im trying to tow something, but thats rare. It spends most of its time around town as my daily driver. I want change the ratio to somewhere between 4.3-4.88. and since I have the unit out I want to put in a posi-lock or LSD.

I have the rear diff figured out other then what kind of LSD Im going to put in the back but what do I need to do it with the front diff. Any suggestions as to what brand to go with and what is the 7.5 or 8 inch. is that dependent on the size of the diff housing?

 

Ignore the 7.5 and 8 inch ring question. 7.5 is the front diff and 8 for the rear

 

If you are going to run the 32x11.50s, 4.56 gears would be just about right for daily driving or 4.88 for off road. as for the current gears, they probably are either 5.29 or 5.71.

i've found different pkg deals on ebay spartan makes a pretty cheap lunch box locker,but i've personally have never used them.

 

I reworked it and 5.71 works just so that probably it. All I know is its way more then I need. Right now Im running 31's not ideal but it was in my budget at the time, and Im running 15 inch rims. so thats what I got. I would like to get 33's or 285/75/16 or the like. Regardless. This is going to be the first thing Im doing on my way to a 1uz swap.

So Im assuming that Im going to have to have equal front and rear ring and pinion gears. if I go to 4.88 in the rear I need to go to 4.88 in the front too?

 

If you plan on a 285/75/16 then keep the 5.71's. I'm currently running that tire size with 5.29's (22re, 5 speed) and the gears could be a little deeper in my opinion.

If you do decide to change the gears you do have to do front and rear the same.
