Catalytic Converter

I have but a couple of questions:

What is the life expectantcy of a catalytic converter?

What is the difference between a performance "cat" and a ordinary "cat"?

My truck has a 108K miles on it and the muffler has been replaced 3 times but never the cat.

well, i have had cats go well over 150,000 miles and other not even to 80,000 miles. you are doing good. from what i have been told- on the newer toyota trucks, there isn't any difference between the high flow cats and the oem ones. the newer oem cats are supposedly free flowing., which is the same as the after market cats out there.

Even the cat on my '85 4Runner is similar in construction to the "high-flow" cat on my truck. I'm convinced there are no significant gains when swapping a high-flow cat on a Toyota. They work best when used in place of GM's old style which was a serious restiction to flow.
