31" tires new motor and gas mileage and power problem problems help!

So I have a 1983 long bed regular can 4x4 I just rebuilt the motor with new rings, bearings, rv cam, weber 3236, tri-y header 2 1/4 exhaust no cat and flowmaster 40 and full head rebuild. I run treadwright 31x10.5x15 on stock gearing which is 4.10 to me this truck feels very under powered but it still has more power than my previous motor. The motor still kinda bogs down on hills trying to maintain 45 in 4th. Is this normal? Also on the freeway I had to floor it to go the speed limit of about 60-65 on a slight hill.

Am I just expecting too much out of a little 22r?
Does this seem like normal 22r power?
Last it feels like it has no more power past half throttle in 3rd and 4th but I also don't take the rpms much past 3000k though.
Please I need help whether I should start thinking of regearing or what?
Any input appreciated but no negative comments please just because i'm 17 building up a first gen doesn't mean I don't know what i'm doing or be bagged on.

try windin her up a little higher.

It shouldnt be that bad. i never really had that problems with 410s and 35s on my first gen.

Gears of course always help.

I like to cruise and drive around 2000 rpms to 2500 should I try keeping it in lower gears and bring rpms up?
I feel like the carb is tuned correctly and I'm also running 8-9 degrees of timing with a msd coil and 8mm wires

yeah, these 4 cyl. motors like to be revved high. i rarely use 5th but thats just me.

If you like to drive that low in rpms get some lower gears

Yeah I'm just thinking the cost and hassle of gearing isn't worth it. I think My new cam taps out about 4500rpms 1st and 2nd I shift around 3500 then 3rd to 4th about 3200

529's seem over kill I was gonna possibly do 456 or 488. 33's is the biggest I plan on running.

Then I would do 488s. Either way i think there is something not runnin right.

because i could pull 20 mpg with 410s and 35s. while cruisin 70 on the freeway.

I run 4:88 gears and use 31" or 33" tires. My RPMs are a little higher when running the 31" but right on when running the 33" tires.

I was running almost the exact same setup (engine mods, gears, and tires) and didn't have AS MUCH issue as you are but they aren't power monsters. I know it's scary, but don't be afraid to hit that 4500 rpm mark. (not baggin on ya, just friendly ribbing) before my rebuild it sounded like it was gonna blow at 3100 (had 385k mi on it) but they'll rap out pretty good if they're in good order. Did you buy a new webber or did you buy a used? A little tune up might help some but 31's on stock gearing is right at the limit on our rigs. I'd wait till you know for sure what size tires you're gonna go to before you re-gear. I got mine at 16 and went through 3 or 4 different suspension setups and a ton of progressively beefier engine mods and wasted a lot of money buying stuff I could afford instead of saving and getting what I really wanted. Being indecisive didn't help either. Been wrenching on it for 15+ years and think it's close to where I want it, but there's always some new and exciting part that sounds good.

PM me if ya wanna get together and go wheelin, tweek tuning, ect, whatever. Am in town and the wife dosen't let me use much money for truck mods so workin on someone elses if a decent substitute.

I got the weber with the truck when I bought it. The truck sat for 4 years but I've have the top off the carb and it is amazingly clean. It might just need a tune I'm just not great at tuning a carb. Yeah it would be great to go wheeling and tune it.

i was referring to my old first gen above. Yeah these motors love high rpms.
granted i beat the hell out of my first gen, i took her up to 5500-6k on the regular.
Specially trying to wheel with 410s and 35s.

3300 isnt too bad. i'd say that fairly normal.

Those little 22r's can b tached with no problems... like said above, its not a power monster, and toyota designed them with higher rpm's in mind... Not sayin it sit on the rev limiter all day, but dont b afraid to wind her out a lil...

If it was a 3vze motor, then ya... I'd say keep the rpms as low as possible! I never tach mine above 3500 rpm, and have had 0 issues with the motors.... But feel free to "romp" on that 22 :-)

This is just hear say but I heard the older 22r loose alot of power when there's no back pressure like that.

Your exhaust setup sounds totally reasonable. I don't think that's your problem. I used to have 2' of 2 1/4" off the headders to a thrush high flow muffler to a 45° bend with another 18" cut off at a 45 that dumped before the rear tire. Ran great, actually had it scare me cuz I hit 3800rpm or so and the exhaust note changed completely and the tac jumped to about 5200 and threw me back in the seat! About sh** myself and thought I broke something the first time it happened. Had to change it over to something a little quieter. My buddy could hear me comming from inside his house from 3 blocks away.

Yeah I wouldn't change the muffler at all I love the sound too much but I might move it to behind the rear tire for Clearence or do a Y pipe and run dual tips one behind each tire that would look great and sound good
