Hi guys. 94 Toyota 22RE 5spd. 4x4 with 316K miles on it. Head was off and redone about 100K ago. Truck idles a tad high when started up cold. Then when it warms up it surges at idle up and down. Up to 1800, down to 1000 or so, like I was lightly blipping the throttle.

I'm guessing IACV? But I sure would be pleased if someone informed me that it was likely the TPS since that is about $100 less.

Surely not both?

Hunter, thanks for your reply. Here is what happened...

When the truck first acted up it was on the bottom 1/8 of the tank. So I threw $20 of fuel in it from the local gas station, which was where I had put the last tank in. The next few times I drove it it still acted up so when I was down to 1/8 tank again I drove it to the next town down the road and filled up at a Marathon station (there is a Marathon refinery in that town and the Marathon station is the newest in town.) I put $40 of fuel in and drove home and when I got in the driveway it was still acting up. A few days later I hopped in it to go to the grocery store and low and behold, it acted normal! So I drove it to work a few times and then filled up again at the Marathon. So far, no further issues.

Am I correct in assuming bad fuel? If so I figure the next time I fill I will throw some Seafoam in just for good measure.

So was it bad gas or did my 316K miles truck just decide to heal itself? Anyone else out there have similar experience with bad gas? Anything else I should do to avoid this in the future?
