heat selector switch/lever doesn't do anything?

1989 4runner

Went and started the truck this morning (-30 degrees) and while it was warming up I tried to move the heat selector from defrost to bi-level and there was a little resistance, then a crunch, then all the lights in that cluster went out and now the switch/lever doesn't do anything at all when I move it. The heat is stuck on defrost.

I'm guessing the lever uses a cable to move the valves and baffles in the dash to get heat in other places? Possible broken cable? Any ideas on why the lights went out?

Thank you in advance.

the bulb housing and wire runs on top of the assembly mayby the wire got caught on the lever and ripped it out? Did you do an LED conversion? or replace the bulb? might pull the panel off and take a look see. sounds like something caught the wire.

the cheap plastic lever probably broke, it did on mine, follow the cable down and you can change the setting, ive seen some posts on it before with pics

Bad connection for the bulb? If I breath on mine the wrong way the light goes out. I know with old lights if their jarred hard enough the filament inside will break.

I feel some resistance in my knobs if its really cold outside, maybe one of the cables broke? Or like nightstalker said the plastic lever broke.

Those cables are routed/supported in plastic behind the dash. Some of yours just had a jihad.

Thanks for the replies folks. I got off early due to it being too cold to work and pulled the heater assembly out far enough to get a look in there. It seems that the wire bent which pushed the little plastic tower it's attached to into the bulb crushing it and cracking the tower. I straightened the wire as best I could and it works again. I just have to move it slowly and I'll be replacing the bulb as soon as it's a tad warmer. Time for a full LED conversion.
