90 4runner 3.0 with a loud tick

I bought my 90 4runner with a 3.0 a couple months ago. All i read is bad bad bad about the 3.0's. Well i didnt know that when i bought it, so i gotta make the best of it. I love the rig so im keeping positive with all its querks. Ive already found a lot of things the guy lied about when he told me all thats wrong with it. It has a bad tick that gets louder as i accelerate. But it seems to run fine otherwise, well except the 10mpg!!! He told me the lifters needed to be agjusted. A mechanic told me its a shim issue. But after reading different things on here i started looking at the injecters. Today i used a screw driver to listen around and i hear the loudest ticking coming from the delivery pipe. So im hoping the issue is up there and not in the lifters or valves. Could i be right? And what more testing can i do to narrow the search down?

To help narrow it down you can unplug 1 injector at a time and see if the noise goes away, I honestly have never heard fuel injectors that loud before, you can also try some thicker oil or additives to see if the noise goes away from the valve train if it is in fact that. The 3.0 is not all that bad, just less reliable than the 22re but still more reliable than other brands out there.

Im new to this motor so bear with me, on the front of the delivery pipe theres a little thing attached to it that kinda looks like a little egr vavle, well thats where i heard the loudest ticking. When i listened to the valve cover i didnt really hear much of anything, it was alot quieter then listening to the delivery pipe, and i'd think if it was a lifter or valve i;d hear alot of noise coming from the valve cover i listened to. . I know the sound is coming from the driver side. But i didnt have enough time to go thru and listen to all the injecters. But the tick was way louder on that little valve thing then on the one injecter that i did listen to. Im only getting 10 or 11 mpg and some stuff ive read said then cold start injecter (i think thats what it said) could be stuck or something and causing exessive fuel consumption.

Is the piece you are talking about at the front of the driver side engine right in front of the throttle body, it is round on top with a few hoses attached to it on top of the fuel rail? If it is that is your Fuel Pressure Regulator, the FPR regulates the fuel pressure in the line and returns extra fuel pressure back to the tank via the return line. It works with a small spring and diaphragm that regulate the pressure and also uses vacuum to help regulate depending on if you are at idle or wide open throttle.

Yes a bad FPR can cause reduced gas mileage.

Maybe someone can give me something to work with on my toyota. Its a 1990 pick up with an auto tranny. Lately ive had this loud tick and once the engine gets warm it starts this terrible ping noise, i feel like its going to blow up! I put a little thicker oil in it to see if maybe it could have been just valve noise, and it was a LITTLE more quiet. The ping noise however is only under loads i.e. freeway, going up a hill etc. i dont even want to take it up to go shooting anymore!
It also gets terrible gas mileage.
ANY thoughts?

You all NEED to read the EPIC thread linked in my sig line.

To the original poster: replace the O2 sensor if you haven't already. Worst offender when it comes to mpg issues. Next worst are vacuum leaks....there are MILES of vacuum hose on the 3VZE~
