1994 toyota 4x4 22re 5spd 179,000 just to let you know what I am dealing with. Went to go grab some beer.I turned the corner about 100 feet from my house and boom. It felt like I hit a huge pothole, turned around and went home got out to check to see if everything was ok and I had gear oil pouring all over the ground. It blew a hole roughly the size of a quarter in the back of the differential. My question is there any way to fix this besides swapping out for a replacement? Also what years are going to be interchangeable? I have changed the gear oil and installed a new breather and fill/drain plugs about 6 months ago.Any help would be awesome.

 

What exactly blew the hole?

 

Don't know exactly! I havent took anything apart yet.It looks like a piece of something broke off inside i can kinda see it I had to move it into the garage and it seemed to roll fine without any grinding or noise. The hole is from the inside out just to clarify any confusion. but i guess something inside needs to be fixed as far as the hole goes total replacement is probably going to be the way to go?

 

any rear axle from a 86-95 should work, from a pickup, if it's a pickup.
if it's a 4runner, then you need an 89-95 axle.

 

Yes its a pickup. Would it matter if the gears we're different say a rear end with 410s for example

 

my buddies brother has a rear end out of an 86-87 4-runner, will that swap over to a truck or are the rear ends different lengths? He seems to think that the 4runner rear is a little longer then the truck one is?

 

Unless you never want to use your 4wheel drive, then yes it is important to get the same gears.

 

You need an axle from a 1990 and up, your truck has coil springs not leaf springs. It has to have the same gear ratio as the one you blew & same as the front.

Unless you want to weld up the hole or seal it with JB weld. Then you only need to change the pumpkin and any 8" diff will do.

 

Leaf springs in the back,coils in the front. I guess the gear question was kinda dumb.

 

When did they start putting coils in the back of pickups?


If it has coils up front then it's not a 1994.

 

Thats kinda what I thought unless he meant that the 4runners have coils in the back. My truck has a 410 rear, and the axle that my buddy has is the same 410 just it is out of a 4runner

Make sure its matching gears, any 8" toyota diff will work. Even one from a front axle. They are all the same. But any IFS width leafsprung housing should bolt right in.

I find it interesting that whatever broke didn`t lock up the rear !!!

I guess you have no welding skills but then I don`t know what is harder to swap in the whole rear end housing or just the differential . just as much work except for the u-bolts and welding of the housing.

Good luck with the U-bolts I know I would want to have new ones so I didn`t waste time trying to get the old ones off.

 

It's the same axle that you have under yours.
Whoever said you need 90+ because of rear coils, needs to get slapped.

 

Ok so we took apart the carrier on the truck and the spider gear that is on top broke into piece. We counted the teeth on the ring gear(big gear)? im not exactly sure what the hell it is called so go easy on me!! on my truck and it was off by a couple of teeth from the replacement. My dads buddy who fixed it said the replacement out of the 87 4-runner could be a 411 and that the truck was probably a 410 whatever the case we had to swap the gears out of mine into the other to make it work with the 4x4. We pounded the metal back and welded it up and put everything back together. I know this is kinda vague but my knowledge of differentials and gears is not that great. I basically did all of the bitch work for him. Needless to say its back together and seems to be working fine
