What do I do to prep my new steering box?

Hey I picked up a used steering box a couple weeks ago cause my seal is leaking and i gotta change it out. I bought the new one from a guy online and he just had it sitting outside in the weather, the fluid lines were not in it so it just has open holes in the side of it and i heard that you're not supposed to get water in it. By now there is probably all kinda of water and dirt in there, I've been keeping it reasonably clean but its still just sitting benched in my shed. What should I do to prepare it for going in to the truck? or can I just throw it in as is? Thanks!!

I would pull it completely apart and clean it. Any dirt will destroy your pump pretty quick.

agreed. if it had water in it, it's probably rusted inside. i'd find a different one.
