can a 3rd gen axle with locker and all wiring be added to a 2nd gen

I was wandering the local Junkyard today and noticed a completely totaled 3rd gen runner. I peaked inside and noticed it had a rear locker. I was wondering what it would take to put the whole axle and wiring into my 2nd gen. Im probably just dreaming but let me know.

Steve,

I would retro fit it. Just use the wiring and 3rd member in your axle.

If you don't decide to do it (which I would if I were you) let me know where it is and if they give you a price.

JIM--

Are you not locked, judging from your post above?

This is something I would consider doing; it would add value to the truck when I plan to sell it in the near future.

I'm guessing a project like this would run up in the 800s if not, closer to a grand.

But I will be. I think I can do a retro fit for under $500. You can get a salvage 3rd member for about $350. Add all of the wiring and switch and gasket, you are looking at $500.

For that price, I will definitely be doing this!

You can't take the whole axle since it is wider and the control arms, shock mounts and similar will not line up with what you have.

I would assume the coil buckets to be of a similar problem, but do not know for sure.

Snag the third, or sell it to Jim.

Read about the housing mods here.

Borrow the wife's car, stick the truck axle in the rear and have at it.

Only problem is the new runners have 4.10's and 4.30's mostly. Old ones have 4.10's and 4.56's with some 4.88's.

Arent most of the 3rd gens at least a little pre-wired from the factory? I would have to buy EVERYTHING. The 3rd member wiring ecu for the e-locker switch. I guess it would just take a lot of tearing that runner apart. When I was standing by it all I could think was what a shame. It was a dark green auto with wood dash trim tan interior and an E-locker and now its dead. So sad.

Steve,

Yes, some 3rd gens are partially wired for the e-locker (mine is). However, for about $75 in wiring, relals and a switch you can put together a wiring kit for yourself or buy one, I think inchworm sells a kit.

If you aren't going to do it, Would you mind letting me know where it is or checking the price?

I am interested in the dash switch, the wiring from the 3rd member to the harness and the 3rd member with the locker motor.

Cool. I bet someone might want it if that junkyard runner becomes a yotatech donor.

That's quite expensive, considering you can get a new one for about $800.
