Ok the 5.29's are a tad deeper than the 4.56's that came out of there, I'm thinking I'm going to like the low speed crawling again and possibly have 5th gear available for use once more.

So here are some issues.

1) Now the truck is blowing some blue smoke. I'm hoping its just because it sat for a week+ while they were doing the work.

2) Idle has dropped a bit (easily adjusted).

3) The front brakes are just about locked onto the rotors.


So I called the place asking about the brakes and if they were bled and was told "no, we didn't touch the brake system." When I asked about the rear I was told that you don't need to remove the brake lines to remove the third member and that the axles and tires were never removed, well I know that's crap since I saw them on the ground when I went for my first hiccup with this. Might be a miss communication though, will sort that out tomorrow.

Went and bled the system as per instructions and had a lot of air in the pass rear and both fronts, oh and my darn little rubber caps are missing... dang it.

So here is my real question. I was told the break in procedure was already started as they drove the rig 5 miles getting up to 60 and then letting it engine brake back down to 40 or so a few times and some other things. Now I only have to do an additional 200 miles of light driving (I've already looked up the procedure on 4crawlers site and will be using that) and am able to run on the interstate just as long as I don't drive faster than 80 and don't drive it for more than 2 hours at a stretch. Does that sound right??

So far no real issues with the folks up there and everyone is being nice.

Now we wait and see if after my 200 miles I notice any real difference off the beaten path.

yeah sounds right with the break in...except ive read for the first time your suppose to drive it for like 30 min and let it cool for 2 hrs or somthing like that..never heard of the engine breaking one...

 

not sure if I believe about "breaking in" new gears .. it's been an issue with me for years !!

when you buy a NEW car/truck .. do they tell you how to break in the gears ? or anything for that matter !! in my experiance .. NEVER

every new vehicle I have ever had , or even gear change I have ever done .. I have never had a problem , drive it as you normally would , I have just not "towed" anything for 500 KM

in order to remove the third member, you MUST remove the axles. And in order to do that the rear drums are disconnected....so therefore the shop LIED TO YOU and it is downright DANGEROUS for them to give the truck back to you without having the brakes bled.

What kinda crappy shop was that!?!?!?!

Drive the truck normally. Let the differentials heat cycle several times.

This is correct. The shop had to have pulled the axles out, which means undo'ing the hub bolts and sliding it out. This requires removing the brake hardlines. Now you know where to NOT take your truck.
