22RE/22R-EC. what's the difference?

while buying spark plugs for my 85' 22re 4runner the parts guy asked me if it was a 22RE or a 22R-EC. I had no idea, but it says it's a 22R-EC under the hood. what does this mean?

22R - the motor code
E - electronic fuel injection
C - California emission

The easy answer is, the 22REC is the California emissions version, which I believe is equipped with more emissions controls/systems.
