Would like opinions about engine repair/swap

Hey all sorry i havent been on in awhile. Ran away from ny from feb till now. Went to mid florida and just had a vacation. did a little work to cover camping cost but otherwise sat on my butt and swam with Small gators LOL!!!
I had to replace the timing chain guides on my 85 4 runner and messed up the head gasket putting it back on.
I have a pretty bad oil leak now but other than that and not enough power (LOL!!!))) The engine runs fine.
I keep the oil filled but would rather fix it cause some days it smokes in the cab. The truck has almost 300,000 miles on it. Its been kept up pretty good only one owner before me. all dealer work before me. I know its a heck of a job to replace the gasket especially with it being so old and bolts rusted on exhaust.
SOOO my question is do i just replace the gasket or do i go for a different engine? something with less miles or maybe even a rebuilt long block? Or maybe just rebuild mine and do the whole thing at once? since its not much more after taking it all apart? I have to save money no matter what i do. I plan on keeping the truck untill there is nothing left and the frame has almost no rust. its a california truck so not much rust. Thanks for your opinions and ill let ya know what i decide.
Sharon

There are lots of swaps out there for you but if you have been happy with the 22RE after that many miles then hell why not get a fresh one with maybe a worked over head and a small cam. Think of all the wear and tear on your old motor after that many miles and what it would have been like in her prime. Plus for what it would cost to do a swap as far as motor mounts, transmission plates, fly wheel, headers, etc. You could buy a header, cam, and ported head with some good valve springs and that alone should give you a good 20hp kick.

Not trying to sway you from a swap there are tons of bad ass ones out there. But if you have been happy with the 22RE think about what it would be like with a fresh one with a few goodies
