1998 4Runner Cargo Door stuck

The rear door on my 1998 4Runner can't open. I've looked at tons of forums but none of them could help. I've taken off the rear panel to get to the linkage and handle but when I pull the linkage and try to push the door open it seems like something is still locked. I can see two wires running two the locking mechanism so I'm wondering if there is a safety lock on this that needs to disengage.

When I first purchased it I used to have to lock then unlock the door switch or turn my car on then off. but since then I bought a jet ski and the clown I bought it from broke something else on it so now it does not open at all. So if someone can point me where to look I would be thankful... and don't say spray WD-40 on everything only monkeys do that.

I have a 1998 4runner and I have the same problem!!! The rear latch mechanism is very touchy. It's very strange because it will work fine and then all of sudden with out warning the latch won't engage.

I figured out what was wrong with mine.

After sitting in the back with the panel off and very frustrated and hot I thought to myself what if the lock is not not closed all the way. so after pushing the locking mechanism close from onside behind the panel I was able the open the back door. After I got the door open I took the lock (latch) off to see how it worked. two points are in the lock when you pull the handle one is supposed to push the other two open the latch but over time this part gets old and bent and I would recommend replacing the latch if you are having problems.

Well the WD-40 worked for me & I'm not a monkey...but sometimes pushing in (not that hard) on the door while pulling the latch works. Otherwise I'd say replacing the latch also.
