Gas tank reserve = 1 gal???

Gas tank reserve = 1 gal???
Today I finished putting in a aux gas tank (NWMP 11.5 tank for a 92 4 runner) in my 87 xtra-cab. One of the last steps is to drain the stock fuel tank. The low fuel light was on steady, came on about 1 - 2 miles before I got home.
I drained the stock tank and only got 1 gal of gas. I was expecting at least 2, maybe 3.
