Tach only works on positive side of coil 82 22r

Tach only works on positive side of coil 82 22r
So as the title says.. i hooked up a tach a few weeks ago, and it only works on the positive side of the coil.. works great.. nothing heats up or etc.. just curious as to why this would be so/.. its a 82 2x4 22r 5 speed. all stock. havent messed with any of the wires, truck runs perfect (42 miles each way to work) and i get 28-32 mpg.... at 70-80 mph
any ideas?
