trans question G58 to W56??

To start my T-case starting making a nasty noise. So, I sourced a complete drivetrain 22re, w56 and T case.... I start tearing into my truck today to find out I have a G58 in my truck. This completely suprised me as I have locking hubs and it says W56 on the jamb tag... So, My question is can I just bolt up the new W56 and T-case and everything will work..... ??? Thanks

g58 has chain driven case, w56 has gear driven. g58 is 26 spline output, w56 is 21 spline

Also the G58 the shifters have separate towers on. W56 they are enclosed under one plate held with 6 bolts

What year drivetrain is the replacement set out of? Just wondering if you have the top shift or forward shift setup on the W56/t-case. Yours was originally a W56C which is forward shift - Both sticks come out of the trans.

Should be a straight swap if you keep the sets together. Your t-case gear reduction will be back to the original 2.28 instead of 2.57 with the G58 setup.

Check these for info:

Curious, my truck has had a portion of the forward shifter floor board cut out, looking underneath the rear shifter barely fits. What does this mean? G series or W series?

Does your t-case shifter come out of the t-case or trans? If trans, your t-case will have a plate over the opening.

Your '87 came with a W56B which is a top shift (t-case shifter comes out of the t-case). If sheet metal has been hogged out in front of your gear shifter, then its possible that someone swapped out the W56B with a W56C/D/E forward shift version (t-case shifter comes out of the trans). Can be done on the 4Runner by cutting the front compartment/cubby off the shifter valence / trim piece and reattaching the whole piece forward the amount you cut off.

I don't know what a truck shifter trim piece looks like - if its the same as a 4Runner or not.

So I did the swap couple disclaimers for people... the T-case mount is not the same ... I had to modify it.... the W65 is about an inch longer that the G58... but drivesshafts are fine.... My speedo cable fit fine.... if you live where salt is used spray all the bolts with PB blaster several times before the job is started... thanks for the help everyone...

Nice work. I never thought about the t-case mount.

In the spirit of forum and info sharing, it would probably be helpful to others in the future to have this info documented on the popular resource for Toyota drivetrain info at http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/

You can email hwagner@4x4wire.com the G58 trans length. Its labeled as "???" in the transmission info matrix and would probably be very useful...may have even prepared you for a modification if it was already there

Just a thought.
