Ok so the storey is this: Just had to move from North Carolina to Vegas. Just got here in Vegas 2 days ago and have to start work and the 4Runner is screwed up some how, need some ideas! I got no time to tinker with this....

The Truck: 87 4Runner, 4x, Man, with Auto-Hubs....22RE

Put it on a dolly to tow the 2,500mi.... Pulled it on the dolly and dropped the rear driveshaft...... used the front wheels in 4wd to get it off the dolly without the rear drive shaft. Put the rear driveshaft back on just the way it came off. backed up to unlock the hubs. Tried to go foward in 2wd and get a CLUNK CLUNK CLUK!!!???? Tried backing up and unlocking them again, same thing.... Put it in 4wd and drove through some deep loose gravel, everything was fine working perfect. Tried puting back in 2wd, CLUNK CLUNK!

Drove it down to the Toyota dealership in 4wd just fine. Tried to show them the problem. PERFECT OPERATION IN 2WD!!!??? Laughed drove off the lot made it 100yds CLUNK CLUNK. Back to the lot in 4wd PERFECT.

They put it on the lift in 2wd and the front right wheel was still turning. So stuck hub right? They spun the tires and got it un-stuck ( I turned the front drive shaft myself on the lift). Drove it 100ft in 2wd CLUNK CLUNK!!!!

So I'm thinking the front hud is not disengaging all the way.... I'm thinking I have to replace them with warn or something manual hubs. But I don't have alot of time before I have to start working here.... I don't have a house yet to work on it..... And I definatly cant afford to replace the hubs and dollars and days later find out it wasn't the hubs....!!!!!???

SO my question to the masses is: Does anyone have experience with bad auto-hubs and is this what happened???? Could this be anything else????!!!!

Yes. That is what happens.

I got a good deal on my 88 Runner because the previous owner thought it had a bad transfercase,but it was just the auto hubs.

As an emergency work around...Just take the front hub covers off and remove the hub gear that locks the front axles shaft to the hub and then close it up again.

You will not have 4wd, but the problem will be resolved until you can afford a pair of manual hubs....

yeah, got it, auto-hubs are crap! I just haven't had a first hand experience with hubs going out. So I just want to make sure before I go assuming a problem and waste time and money messing with it I got a good idea it's the real problem from some that have had experience......

So what are the best easy-to-aquire manual hubs????

the stock manual ones are the best.
but if you cant find those, the warns work too.

 

I dumped my auto hubs a long time ago, and I am really glad that I did. Those things were very unreliable. They would engage when I did not want them to and then when I would go offroading, they would not lock completely. They were terrible.

I got mine from the wabbit, here on this forum. They were not cheap, but they were in excellent shape and nicely rebuilt and they came with new gaskets. I am glad I got them from him. Plus now when I go off-roading, it handles the way it was meant to.

 

So when they didn'tlock completly, did they make a CLUNK CLUNK sound??

 

Heli, if you're in a pinch where you don't have access to tools or space to do it, shoot me a PM. I'm leaving town on Sat morning for a race but I can't imagine yanking the hubs to do the quick fix would take more then like 20 mins and you could possibly knock it out in my drive way tonight or tomorrow night if needed. Normally I'd have all the time in the world but it's my parents last night in town so I have to hang with them tonight and tomorrow night is packing for the weekend. I can give you the jack and point you to the tools though if needed... I'm on the east side of town near 95 and tropicana if you know where that is. (new to town... I know...)

Does it drive in 2wd? 4wd?
Where is this clunk clunk coming from?
Hubs are easy to change out, I don't think you even need to take the wheel off, just the center cap.
Cone washers can be fun. Just thread on the nut (so you don't damage the threads) and pound on the stud/nut with a brass drift and hammer (ratchet extension works too). The cone washers will loosen and pop off. Then take off the center cover of the hub and remove the gold bolt.
It'll take you a little bit of fiddling around to get the first one but after that you'll get the second one off in 10 minutes.

 

i too would like to know where the sound is originating from. my buddies manual hub got stuck while engaged, and it kept his CV spinning, but no clunking. a CV stuck engaged shouldn't make a clunking unless it has a torn boot and is shot. i would suspect something else is the cause of this noise because it doesn't happen in 4x4 (where both CV's should be engaged).

as for removing the cone washers, if you whack the cover plate above each cone washer it should pop free and not risk damaging the threads. (if they are resisting, use PB Blaster to free them, but make sure to clean it all off before putting it back together

 

I never had any clunks at all.

I'm starting to lean in the direction of the other forum members suspecting that it may be your CV or axle. Its just weird that it happens on 2wd but not in 4wd.

If I were you I would probably just remove the hubs and run it on 2wd to see if the clunking continues. Removing the hubs is pretty simple. I think you just need a 10mm socket and 12mm, and that copper thing to remove the cone washers.

 

4WD: works with no problem
2WD: clunk clunk!

"seams" to originate from the passenger side front wheel. Faster you go, faster the clunk gets.

Then sometimes at low speeds it will stop doing it for a while. First time it stopped thought all was well again and got up to speed (about 35) and it started clunked alot as a slowed down and then at one point made a higher faster 'lot of little plastic teeth skipping noise' like a kids whinned up toys when you stop them..... didn't sound metal. then slowed down, clunk clunk, then put back into 4wd mode and worked fine..... wierd.

 

Any progress on this issue? What have you done to isolate the problem?

 

Bring it by the shop this week if you havent gotten this resolved. if you dont want to drive it down in 4wd call me and i can swing by and have a look.

dude ive seen this before when one of the hubs messes up like this (mine did) the other spins the opposite way its supposed to and for some reason in 2wd it makes a bad sound i (which i dont completely understand anyway...) just put a new mhub in and went on never heard from it again

 

Success, sorry for the delay but not long after I last posted I got new warn manual hubs with the conversion kit. Did the swap myself so learned something new. Between the hands and the single sided o.e page instruction I got it over the weekend. Hardest part was finding a giant socket for the hub nuts. The for all ideas and suggestions.

 

for future reference a crappy screwdriver and a hammer can be used to get that giant nut off. glad you got things worked out.
