I have the chance to buy some 4.56 front and rear ring and pinion from a 93 4runner for under 100 bucks. I have an 87 4runner 22RE 5spd which has 4.10 gears. What questions would I need to ask to make sure they'd fit in my 4runner? Anyone know offhand if they would be an easy swap? The reason I'm looking to swap gears is to move to 32's and not lose any power.

 

Does he have the whole 3rds? It would probably be easier just to swap them instead of setting up gears...

 

4.30 to 4.56 is a waste of time for minimal gain

The whole 3rds will.
The R/p, will also, but you have to buy a master rebuild kit and set up the gears again.

 

It's not the whole 3rds, he swapped in some 5.29's so he just has the stock 4.56's leftover.

Sooooo...even if I put 32's on my 4R with 4.10, and drove...saaaay, all the way to South America? You don't think it would be worth the effort? I was figuring it would help with MPG and power uphill (which would be nice driving thru the Andes). Basically, if the investment now saves me more money over 30,000 miles then I will do it but if the gain is minimal like you said then I'll forget about it. Figured I should give you guys a little background, to answer my query a little better.

Would it make more sense to hunt down some whole 3rds from a pick N pull? Or is that still not worth the effort for little gain?

well, it's entirely up to you.
I'd check your gear codes on your VIN to ensure you have 4.30's, and if you do then stay 4.30's
They're a good gear ratio.
4.56's would be good for 32's or 33's.
But i'd carry a spare R/P anyways if you're going on a trip like that.

 

I would say unless you got a screaming deal, one jump in gears is not worth it. Plug it into a gear calculator. maybe 100rpms?? 4.10 to 4.56? worth it. 4.30 to 4.56? iffy. I have 4.56's and currently with 31's, but I will be upgrading to 32's when the tax return gets here. the speedo likes 32's with 4.56's. And I do, too.

I bet you have 4.10s if truck is stock
4.30s were typically in automatics

Yeah, it's definitely stock. Let me check...Sure enough: G292 which means I have an 8" rear with 4.10s...so you're saying that would be more worthwhile? How much would I expect to pay my mechanic to swap em out for me? Like peow130 said, I should probably carry a spare r&p anyway, so I suppose I could swap in the 4.56's and carry the 4.10's as a spare.

The guy's asking $75 bucks + shipping, and since it's a '93 4runner...as long as it's an 8" rear too, it should swap in right? What else would I need to consider?

Find the whole diff. Way easy swap you can do yourself. Found my 4.56 diffs for $220. Just find a stock rig being parted out with code G254 pull diff and the count teeth to double-check. Look for a 2nd gen 4runner or 3rd gen pickup with a 5 speed. Then check codes.
