4.56 gears: Fun With My Rear End
I want to swap in a used 4.56 third member into my 1986 22re/auto Toyota Motorhome. It's a pretty common upgrade/mod for Toyota Motorhomes with the 1-ton dually rear end, which comes has a standard 4.1 ratio. The 4.1 is not well-suited to the mismatch of a 22re to a 6000-pound camper.
Yes, I can buy the ring and pinion and rebuild my current setup but the cheapest I can do that is for about 600-700 bucks including setting the gears at a decent gear shop, master bearings/seals kit plus the gears themselves. And when it's done, I no longer have my original pumpkin in case I want to go back.
My current axle code is G292 for the 4.1 gear (8") and as far as I can tell the G-series 4.56 code is a G252. I'm pretty sure about this. But its also true, I think, that other A-code 4.56 third members will bolt right up to the G-series. And this is where things get funky.
QUESTIONS:
• Does anyone know for sure that the A, B and G have the same axle spline and differential flange?
• And also so does anyone know for sure what the code is for an A or B-series 4.56? I think it is B04B - but I'm not sure.
• What vehicles tended to use either the G252 or compatible A-series gears?

Kinda-sorta.
Erik's swap-page says that V6 carrier can't be used in a 4cyl differential without a bearing change but I don't know if that applies to the 1-ton dually, which I think is not the same animal as the 1/2-ton. He doesn't mention the dually, so I don't know.
What got me going was this:
