Exclamation 90 3vze aut0matic or 85 22re manual (HELP!)

i currently own a 1990 3vze automatic 4runner. the previous owner treated it like s**T. in my 6 months of owning it, my radiator blew, idler arm broke, knock sensor went bad, had electrical problems (engine wouldnt turn over), and when i pulled the spark plugs they completely crumbled in my hand. other then all the engine problems its a kick a** truck. but with gas prices going up and me only getting 11-13 mpg, this truck is starting to bite me in the.

my question is should i keep this truck and start puttin money into it? or should i buy another one? MY friend is currently selling a 1985 4runner with the 22re motor in it, it supposedly has a rebuilt motor. I do a lot of highway driving because my gf moved 20 miles away and i dont want to have to end up buyin a honda . I am out of work and my parents lost thier jobs too(im 18 btw).... Is a 90 worth selling for a beat up 1985?

(p.s.newbie ques: does a 22re get off the line quicker? i knw it aint no sports car but my 3vze feels sluggish till about 3300 rpms. and im sorta gettin sick my friend burning me in his blazer.i at least wana keep up )
