difference in 20r and 22r engine

besides the obvious. i have an older motor out of an 83, i believe, but cant remember which motor it was. i can see the stamping on my 94 that states its a 22r. i was considering building another motor and was gonna use the other block and head if it was a 22r, but cant tell. i looked today and could not find any stampings on the block. are there any other ways to tell what spare motor i got without pulling the head..externally examining.
