Just installed a new steering pump on a buddy's '84 FJ60 (posted to IH8MUD too, but this is homebase so I wanted to ask y'all). It's a Saginaw style reservoir-on-top pump.

All new hoses and pressure line, flushed it out, filled.
With the return line off the reservoir, I cranked the motor in short bursts til fluid came out nice and free of bubbles while I filled the reservoir.
Then I turned it lock to lock a few times with the motor off.
Then I let it idle.
Then I turned it lock to lock several times with the motor running.

At this point, I start the truck and turn the wheel a little- nice and quiet and easy to turn.
After a few turns, it starts moaning like a dying cow. The more I turn, the worse it gets. First few times the ATF looked frothy in the reservoir.
So I'd let it all settle then try again. Same result.

Now, the key piece to the puzzle is that this 'buddy' is actually my girlfriend's dad. So I'm reeeeeally not stoked on replacing his leaky pump with one that groans starting fifteen seconds after startup. Anybody got any bright ideas or soothing tidbits of wisdom???

Well I have had a few reman pumps that where bad outta the box. It sucks when you go through all the work and it still no go. Not posotive its the problem but maybe!

 

Put the front up on jackstands. Run the motor and cycle the steering 20+ times with reservoir cap off. Turn motor off. Let it sit 30 minutes for air to dissipate. Fill if it gets really low but only then. Repeat as necessary. Fill to level once bled completely.
