Turn signals stopped working!

Happy Thanksgiving, all! My turn signals in my 99 4runner have completely stopped working - was working in the morning, fired it up in the evening and now they're not. Checked the fuse, it is still good. I have had an annoying issue since I bought it - when I put on the right turn signal, it made a really loud creaking sound, almost like it was electrocuting me. Now, it does absolutely nothing. The two things may or may not be related.

What do you think the problem is? Is it something I can replace myself? I'm not really experienced, but I'm not afraid of getting in there and mucking about. I can do this as the same time I replace my antenna mast, which appears to have stripped its gears I love my 4runner, but don't have the $$$ to take it to a mechanic right now. But, wow, i'm tired of sticking my arm out the window to signal for a turn. Not the best solution to signal a turn doing 75 mph down I-95....

BTW - my first 4runner was a 94 which I also loved. Blew a head gasket. We don't talk about that anymore..... haha

Do your 4 way flashers still work??

It could be the switch if you have flashers.

I am guessing it does nothing when you engage the switch.

You live in New Jersey are you sure the turn signals ever worked?? I thought vehicles sold there all declined the turn signal option.

I doubt most people have any idea why you are flapping your arm other to fly

You can test the switch at the plug coming out of the steering column I don`t have the electrical manual handy but with a jumper wire from a 12 volt source you can power up the switch and go from there.

Good luck

Wyoming - heehee on the turn signal option... My daughter has given me so much guff over the years about not using my turn signal that I obsessively use it now..

Yes, the 4 way flashers continued to work. UPDATE: I went back out this morning and messed around with the fuses, and now MAGICALLY the turn signals appear to be working. For how long? Who knows...

I'm glad, too, because your post about "jumper wire from a 12 volt source" just about broke my brain... haha No habla mechanica talk.

Just how far South Jersey?

Most times the salt air will corrode connections.

Sometimes the female end of the fuse holder gets bent then the connection works when it feels like.

At least you know where the problem lies .

You might end up having to just clean the block side with contact cleaner

Good Luck
