Newbie post, 89 4-runner, where is the fuel filter??

Heh, yeah. So my 89 4-runner has a rough/loping idle and has been stalling at stops. I adjusted the plug gap and it helped a little, also replaced the wires again (replaced them in Feb) and I'd like to replace the fuel filter after reading on here about how it helps with high mileage vehicles. But I have failed to locate it in the engine compartment, and after tracing the fuel lines I wondering if it is, in fact, on top of the fuel tank like Haynes says it could be.

My 89 4-runner is a 4 cylinder, EFI, with about 400k miles. And I'm about 90% positive the fuel filter hasn't been changed, ever. So, is it in the engine compartment and I missed seeing it, or is it on top of the tank and I need to drop the tank to replace it?

I would also like to know of any good threads for this model because I'm getting to the point where I want to redo some things, like the interior and paint. The engine is pretty sound, I do most of the maintenance myself, and major services like timing chain, new head gasket, new starter, have been done within the last 3 years.

Thanks!

There is one inside the fuel tank on the fuel pump, it is the other one I want to change. I will have to wait for light tomorrow and take the brush guard off to see if I can find the sucker since it wasn't topside. Thank you for the manual link, I found a diagram that helped.

It is a PITA to get to that filter. I did mine when I did my headgasket just because I figured I had no better opportunity with the head and intake manifold out of the truck. In hindsight I should have relocated it somewhere else in the engine bay for easy access. Here is a pic from pirate4x4 of the filter location on a stock 22re...(The starter is directly below it)

If you're thinking of relocating it when you change it, there's a good thread here on YT...

...Hope this helps.

There is no actual fuel filter in the tank.

What you guys are referring to is the fuel pump pickup screen.
It may technically be a filter but, it is not referred to as a fuel filter.
And the screens in the tank normally don't require changing.
