Cranking/battery/cylinoid/starter?

Problem: Sometimes when I go to crank up in the morning it clicks once when I turn the key. Then I try again and its the same click (just one click when turning my key to start up). Then on the 3rd to 4rth try it gives a lazy crank like it turns over twice but does not fire up. Then on the next crank it usually turns over and fires up.

It does not do this all the time but in the past 4 to 5 weeks its been doing it ever so often.

Iv always had problems with my battery because I have backuplights hooked to it, subwoofer amp, and I think one other thing.

Iv cleaned the terminals. I got my battery checked twice and they told me that its got a full charge. Of course they would not give me my warrenty on a battery that is supposed to be good for 3 years and iv only had it for a year when they see that its fully charged.

I did have my terminals modified from my old stock ones so i dont have the complete ring that goes around my negative one. I cleaned this part off to thinking it wasnt getting enough connectivity. Did no have any problems for a week and then it started no cranking on the first turn agian.

Has anyone else had this problem before? could it be the cylinoid or starter?

Im thinking the true test would be to wait untill the next time it clicks once, then hook up another car battery (jumping it) and c if it fires right up on the next crank since normally it takes about 3 to 4 tries just to get it to turn over and then crank on the next go. Problem is I cant do this at my apartment and have to wait till nov. break. If this isnt it im gonna go ahead and put it in the shop and let them check it out.

thanks guys

sounds like the starter contacts and plunger to me. Easy to do and cheaper than a battery, I would start there and also make sure all your battery connections and grounds are clean and good and the little wire that goes to the starter is clean and secure as well.

if it were the battery itself then you would hear several fast clicks from the starter not just the one. Unless it's completely dead, but then it wouldn't start at all regardless of how many times you turn the key.

do a search on here for starter contact replacement, you will see what I mean. A hint would be you don't have to buy a whole new starter.
