Rusty/Clogged water canister near oil pump.

Hey, been a while but my motor was being dropped inn today after a head gasket and piston ring and a couple more things were fixed and noticed these two hoses coming from my block to a canister type thing next to my oil filter. one hose is clean and the other is completely clogged with rust and other gunk.. Anybody know what this canister does and why or how the hose could be clogged like that?

Sorrry I have no piks but its on the same side of the motor as the oil filter. Seems like some water reservoir or something of that nature.
Its a 3.o in a 1990 4Runner.

Thanks all and any tips/help is appreciated!

Had to steal someones picture. But this is it and both hoses were clogged. And I believe the object is clogged as well.

would this being clogged cause overheating and cause the truck to run horribly?

Got it.. Clogged oil cooler hoses and maybe clogged oil cooler.. therefore no oil to keep t stat open therefore it stayed shut hence all the over heating.. And im guessing this has a huge impact on whether the motor is running good or not.??? and the temperature state.?
