90 3vze 2wd auto xtra cab

OK, the rear axle has 2 seals, an inner & outer, if the inner is good & not leaking then what purpose the the outer serve? is it to keep oil in or dirt out?

I'm leaking gear oil through one of the axle seals, pulled the axle out & replaced the inner since it's easy to do. I don't have a press or the service tool to do the outer so I just was hoping it was the inner that was worn. I drove about 75 miles today & had some slight leaking again. Since the inner was replaced wouldn't it stop the oil from ever getting to the outer? The bearing seemed ok.

What am I missing here?

Did you check that your breather isn't clogged? It can cause oil to be forced past the seals if it is.

The outer seal is probably to keep water out of the bearing, but that's a guess. I'm sure one of the gurus around here can give a definitive answer.

 

eh, you can just replace that inner one and hope for the best...

Ideally, yes you would replace them both though

But just keep in mind that you do in fact need access to a press to get the outer one off, like you said. You actually have to press the bearing off, sooooo, if you do need to replace that outer one, it's not a bad idea to replace those bearings while you're in there too

 

The breather was the first thing that I tossed in the trash can & I used a threaded nipple & some hose. It seemed like it just held too much pressure in. When I removed it I heard a pssssh sound (lol)

Maybe it's just some left over oil that was trapped in between the inner & outer? I will see if it leaks again tomorrow, If so then I'll pull it back apart & replace the inner, outer & bearing. I'll just take the axle shaft to a shop so that the bearing can be pressed. I wish I could just do it at home.
