BARN FIND: 1981 Toyota Trailblazer

So. . . I've been looking for a donor truck to use in my restoration of a 1981 Sr5 project. I ran across a guy who had a toyota trailblazer. It had been sitting in a barn for 3-4 years he says. I drove 250 miles today to pick it up.

I wasn't really looking for another restoration project, but you can't just pass on something like this, correct?

Yeah I'd keep that as "project #2" and find a third rig for parts... That's another great find, congrats...

I gave him $1500 for it. It turns over, but does not start. I'm going to do new plugs, distributor cap, battery, check the wiring, etc. and see what happens. I've read so much about how rare these trailblazers are, I figured it was worth it, no matter what the state of the engine.

Good Score!!! I think that price was about right...as long as the floor of the cab and bed are not toast it looks to be in good shape body wise

wholly crap, just noticed the way you had the strap going over the top of the cap....probably not a good idea. hopefully you did not screw up a hard to find/replace bed to cab seal...

recommend next killer deal like this you get tie down the frame or axle, one good bounce and that cap would have been toast

Well. . . the previous owner has at some point tried to remove the topper by force/prying. It is loose. We had to strap it down so it did not blow off on the highway. The vehicle was strapped down by the axles.

Pretty cool, a bit cleaner looking than my last Trailblazer too. Mine was also a barn find, well a "field find" actually. It was parked in a field in Ohio behind a guys house in 1995 and was literally never even touched again until 2004 when i bought it!! Mine would crank as well but wouldnt start, i ended up changing the ignitor/coil from a junkyard 22r (cost me $3) and it started up instantly. After changing the fuel, cleaning the carb etc it actually ran fine for about 2yrs until i finally sold it.

Just a little FYI to try and help stop the spread of false information... the craigslist ad said only 400 were made, that is incorrect. There were 4,000 made each year of production, 1981,1982,1983 for certain and possibly 1980, i cant remember. I bought mine from the original owner who still had all the paperwork, plaques, stamps, certificates etc, mine was #3589 of the 4000 made in 1983. So there were at least 12,000 made and possibly 16,000.

They are definitely cool little trucks, who doesnt love a 1st gen with a back seat (thats why i daily drive a Tekker now!!) i think you should hang onto it too and make it nice again cause they are getting harder to find, unless you know were to look
