Rear axle oil seals

I have gear oil leaking into my rear drums. I know that there are two oil seals on each side.

My question is. Do need to replace both, the inner and the outer, seals to stop the leaking?

The inside ones are relatively easy to replace but I'm not sure if replacing just them will stop the leaking.

not completely sure Gerdo, but why not go ahead and do both? Are you pressed for time or parts or both?

An ounce of prevention and all that, you'll have it taken apart anyways...my drivers side rear inner was done twice before Toyota updated the part design. Be sure the final digit of the part number is a "6".

I am curious to see this done so if you need shop assistance I am glad to help and learn.

The outer seals are a lot of work to do. You have to remove the bearing and the collar that holds it on and the ABS ring and the collar that hold that on too. The outer seal is basically a dust sheild. The inner one is much easier to replace and it's the one that keeps the gear oil from leaking.

I would think that the inner is all that is needed. The outer is a LOT of work to do. If I can stop the oil from getting that far then everything should be fine.

Update. I talked to my good friend that owns an auto parts shop. He confirmed that the gear oil has flushed the grease out of the bearings and I needto replace the main seals, bearings and the outer seals.
