Does that sound right? Doesn't seem like it to me. The guy I bought it from was all gung ho about what great shape it was in.

When I drive around I don't hear it except in first and second gear. I didn't even know it was doing it in all gears until i tried putting the tcase in neutral and running it stationary.

The oil is full, clean, and of the proper type in both the transmission and transfer case.

It's got a bit of a whine to it that I don't remember my old gearbox having. Almost sounds like straight cut gears a little, or like the transfer sounds like in 4LO. I'm on the fence as to whether this sound is normal or abnormal enough to warrant doing anything about. It just seems like there's definitely a whine there.

I hear a very slight whine, but nothing that I would worry about. What kind of fluid did you put in it? Have you checked to make sure it's full after running it through the gears some?

The oil in the transmission now is 75w-90 GL5. I forget what brand. I have a few quarts of MT-90 in the garage for the transmission once I find a keeper.

 

Haha. Yeah the windshield wipers should probably be replaced, I know. They work okay. It was spritzing just enough to need them but not enough to lubricate the windshield.

 

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

What shape was the pilot and throwout bearing when you put it in? That's what I would check cause it seems like the sound lessens when the clutch is depressed. Probably the first thing I would check would be that pb and tob.

 

Brand new, both of them. The whine is coming from the gearbox itself. I'd be less hesitant to write this off as a normal noise if it weren't for the fact that I don't remember my old one doing it. That one was a W56-C (1990) with 177k miles on it. This one's supposed to be a W56-E (1993) with 52k miles on it.

Assuming that the guy I bought it from was being truthful, it only has 52k on it. The clutch and flywheel from it were good. Even the shifter seat was in great shape. It shifts nice and tight. I have every reason to believe it is indeed only 52k miles old, and I just can't imagine you could break one of these in only 52k miles no matter how poorly you treated it. That makes me lean toward this just being normal gear noise. It's really hard for me to tell though.

I don't want to go through the hassle, expense, and risk of another transmission swap because I was having OCD about how this perfectly good transmission sounds. But if it's *not* good, I don't want it in my truck waiting to strand me when it dies and annoying me every day until it does.

 

If I heard it when I depressed the clutch, I'd be sure it was the pilot or release bearing, but it's happening with clutch engaged only. They're brand new, anyway.

 

Every Toyota truck manual transmission I've ever had whines, some more than others. I couldn't really hear anything either except maybe a valve tick like others said.

 

It seems like the Yotatech consensus is that I should replace my windshield wipers, adjust my valve lash, and not fret too much about my slightly noisy new transmission. That works for me. Thanks, everyone.

Sounds like a normal Jap Tranny to me!!

 

The tranny sounds fine to me, but it sounds like your valves need to be adjusted.
