I was changing out my transmission oil today and noticed that a previous owner had removed the bolts holding the tranny to the cross member. Does anyone know off hand what size they are ?

edited to add: It appears they could not get the holes in the transmission to line up with the holes in cross-member bracket and that is why the bolts are missing. They are off by a bolt hole width.

 

I'm assuming you're talking about the 4 bolts that bolt the trans to the trans mount. Not the four bolts that hold the trans mount to the bracket, nor the four bolts that hold the bracket to the crossmember.

Those bolts are 14 mm head, 10 mm X 1.25 mm X 22 mm long threads.

If your's is the same as mine, there's a bracket bolted to the crossmember. IIRC, the holes in that aren't slotted, so there's no adjustment there. You can loosen the trans mount bolts a little, and slide the mount.

If the holes still don't line up, you'll have to check the motor mounts, and see if they are lined up properly or not. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you other than you might have frame issues.

 

Support the transmission with a Jack not in your way . loosen all the bolts so you can move the crossmember you might even need to take it down .

Get all the bolts in and started on the trans so you still have movement . bolt the trans mount to the cross member. At this point the cross member is hanging real loose by the 4 bolts to the frame . Get the 4 bolts into the mount from the bottom.

tighten all the bolts in the mount and trans tighten the crossmember to frame bolts..

It should all be good now.

He's talking about the 4 small 12mm bolts that mount upwards into what the FSM refers to as the "engine rear mounting bracket" (the bracket that has the rubber piece in it that sits on top of the crossmember)

You can get under the car and lift the transmission and transfer case enough to get the bolt holes to line up. no jack needed, the weight is largely resting on the rear of the engine. Just dealt with this today actually.

But if you do have frame damage, I guess all I can say is have a nice day!

 

Thanks! Those are the four bolts I was referring to. The suggestions for getting the holes to line up are much appreciated.

 

I jacked the transmission up just enough to let the rubber pieces decompress then I was able to flex the mounting bracket enough to get two bolts in. The front drive shaft is in the way on the passenger side( for now), but two bolts is better than no bolts.

 

Does anyone know the torque specs for the crossmember bolts, both into the transmission and onto the frame?
