22re: very high high idle, very low low idle

Now that the weather is colder, i've noticed the high idle in my 22re being high for a very long time, and idling very high. When i go out in the morning to start my runner, i let it idle for about a minute or so to get the oil pressure up, and then i head out of town. every time i put the clutch in or just wait at a stop light, the engine is idling on high idle at about 2000 rpm. it stays this way for about 15 minutes (it could be longer, but after 15 minutes, i'm out of town and on the highway so i don't notice it).

Then once the engine is warm (temp gauge slightly below 1/2, don't know if the temp gauge is a real temp gauge or glorified idiot light, though) i notice that the idle is about a needles width above 500 (it used to be about 750) and is seems a little rough, but it's not close to stalling or anything.

is 2000 too high for high idle and 500ish too low for normal idle? and should it really take 15 minutes for it to go to normal idle. and if these are not good numbers, can i (easily) adjust it?

if it matters, this is a '89 4runner, 22re, about 225k miles.

thanks
mike

my truck does the same...i was told that it was very common and what it is doing is that our engine has a auto choke and does that till it's completely warm then idles back down but as with you mine does idle a little rough (the needle sits just under a little bit of the 1 grand point on the tach) so im not sure if that is normal or if i need to fix it.

Same here. I might be getting the whole fuel delivery system cleaned, if so will post results. My idle also "sticks" and I have to tap the pedal to drop it to normal. I believe this is a clogged dashpot from research, might clean that this week and see what happens.

Sounds like your choke is sticking on your 22RE. The choke is "sticking" and is not responding to the change in temperature of your engine, and justing the fuel/air ratio like its supposed to. So, either replace the auto choke, or install a manual choke that can be adjusted from the cab, that is a bit more of a hassle to use, but you get used to it.

I'd inspect all vacuum lines for leaks and check the t-body to see if it needs cleaning.

i didn't know EFI engines had chokes. i thought they were only on carbed engines. i'll check it out though.

You're right, for some reason I thought the 22RE engine was old enough to still be carbed, my bad!

Mad chemist, you're too funny.....choke on an EFI
Don't go asking for a new one of those at the parts desk.

Anyway, I bet if you clean the throttle body it will solve the problem.

Yeah, showing my age a little, I think there are fewer and fewer of us who have ever owned/driven a car with a carb.

What 22re's do have is a cold start injector. When it's cold it uses this gadget to adjust until it heats up. Set your idle (warm) back up to 750 and have the csi checked... some others to check on would be the tps, and throttle body cleaned.
