I have an 85 4runner with the auto tranny, when it is shifted in to drive it will not go but, if you shift it in to 1st and manually shift it, It drives fine. what could be the problem? I cant do the jumper wire trouble shooting test because the light for the over drive does not work in the dash. any help would be great.

 

I bought an 86 truck with an auto trans that would not shift on its own. Took it to a trans shop the guy sent me to have the truck tuned up, and surprise surprise the trans worked fine from that point on.It would seem the trans computer has to have the right info from the engine computer to work.Now that may be the same Problem,It might not be ,But tuneups a lot cheaper to find out then to tear down the trans.Good luck
