1986 Pickup 2.2 4 banger Loud rattle noise
Hey all i just got this pickup last night i posted up a thread here introducing myself but after running the truck more today and really paying attention sounds like the motor may need some serious help. I thought it was a 22re ? motor but it says nothing on it so i guess it isnt? like i posted before Toyotas are TOTALY new to me. Jeeps, mustangs GM cars i can work on with my eyes closed lol but i want to expand my horizons so i want to make this truck run MINT....
Heres a video of whats going on and how it sounds. This is decently warm already its not a cold start then video...

I cant tell if its lifter noise, cam play, rods etc. the manafold is leaking abit in the back of the motor so alot of the sound is coming from that when i hit the gas but idle you can certainly hear its not healthy.. Maybe someone could point me in some kind of direction. If its a total loss i will be swapping in a new motor but if i can get away with a new head or maybe even less that would be great haha

You'll need to check your valves first, and while your in there, check the timing chain guide and tensioner. Pretty easy fix. Then fix your exhaust manifold leak. Also, you do have a 22re, and it's a 2.4l.

I agree- check the valves. The clicking when you open the throttle doesn't sound quite right either. To me, that suggests something with the timing chain but the frequency / timbre of the sound doesn't sound right. It sounds almost like an electrical arc as opposed to a mechanical tap or click.
I don't see the PAIR air tube from the air filter housing over to the valve under the intake. I didn't know that the distributor had a vacuum canister on them. I thought those were from the analog EFI 22re's on Celicas. 4Crawler... Roger... Do you want to jump in here?

My 87 has the vacuum distributor. Also, the noise when he opens the throttle sounds like the manifold exhaust leak to me. It is hard to tell from a video though....
I do agree...he's probably got some issues with the timing chain.

Exhaust leak on the throttle, and valves are way out of lash (or somebody torqued those valve cover bolts on waaaaay too tight, and the rockers are hitting the valve cover; I do see a little more black rubber squished out than normal)
and wow, my truck's a special edition, it has .2 more liters
lol, just mess'n with ya

Would valves being out of lash cause the motor to smoke? Its smoking it seems like from he tail pipe but its not gray and it does not smell like coolant oil and radiator fluid is clean. It smells almost like unburnt gas or maybe a mixture of that and oil just wondering maybe they could be connected?
