Which friggin 5spd is the one I need?
Hey look, here I am again asking what should've been an easy to answer question, though now I've done and got myself even more confused.
As you guys can tell from my sig, '88, 4spd (G40) manual transmission, 22R (carb), 2wd, yadda yadda. I want to put a 5spd transmission in it, and seem to have a few options that have only served to confused me more.
I've spent hours, days, weeks, etc, trying to figure out which 5spd transmission it is that I actually need, and what I need to do to mount it up, I've gotten information from loads of places and none of it seems to come to a solid point of agreement. Some places say certain transmissions were used for 2wd for my year while others contradict this info, easy enough to figure out (yeah right), I -think- I've narrowed it down to 3 or 4 different models, which is basically all of them.
So, I am starting with a g-type 4spd, G40 tranny, which would lead me to assume that I need a G5X (either G52 or G54), but some of the info I get says that they used those with 4wd carbbed only, while others say the G52 is the one I want. Yet some other places say that it's the W56 transmission that was used with carbbed 2wd models for my year, and a few other places say it's a 2wd tranny but many many others say it's 4wd (which I'm pretty sure it is). Also, I believe that the G40 (like other g-type trannies) is forward shift. The more I read into it, the more confused I get. I've also heard that the G54 is basically a stronger G52, and by what I've ready on Marlin the G54 is the right one, yet other info contradicts this. I'm so ruddy confused.
Someone also suggested that I try to track down a W57-equipped supra and that I'd only have to swap my G40's bellhousing onto it. Is this true? It seems unlikely, but the gearing on the W57 seems more in-tune with the pre-runnerish ideas I have bouncing around in my head for this truck.
I even tried talking to a couple of (useless) techs at the local dealerships, and after consulting their manuals, none were able to give me a conclusive idea as to which transmission I need, one even saying that I could get away with either of the 3 because the G and Ws bolt onto the engine in the same way, which makes some sense, but at the same time I've been lead to believe that the G and W types are incompatible. The others agreed that they had no clue.
Basically, I just want to know which transmission it is I am after, I have a few options out there already, but I need to know which one to get first. Hopefully someone here can help me figure this out. I also tried searching around on a few 2wd 'yota forums, but can't seem to find any real info, most of it just complaints about the 5th gear in the G52 dying all the time.

Well I guess I am confused- as you state that originally it came with a 4 speed, so what makes you think any 5 speed will actually work with your exact model?
I am guessing you are just assuming there should be a bolt up application and it could well be that you have no other alternative truly available. Or you think you read about some other guy doing this and having no issues, but in reality his rig was different from yours.
Do we have a real truck out there that this has been done to? Link us to the thread please....
Don't get all technical with me. I am no mechanic and not pretending to be....
I am just trying to make you re-examine the whole thought process involved. Like you perhaps, I sometimes get an idea in my head but the whole idea is just not feasible, but I am so far into it I can't step back and realize where I assumed incorrectly.
And this is not a newbie type question, so I encourage you to also post up in 86-95 section or whatever to get better answers. I think some of the regulars just don't come over here to NEWBIE TECH too much and there is probably some dude over in regular section that knows all about this right off top of his head.
Good luck with this and hopefully you have only brain damage at this point and not much wallet leakage.
Not trying to be a smart aleck-this is how I help people out-talk it out or whatever.

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
Step one: Find a Toyota 2WD 5 speed transmission
Step two: Measure your drive shaft and compare it to the one in the truck, IF the wheel bases are the same, you got the 5 speed out of.
Step three: Find a drive shaft that will work and bolt the 5 speed onto the back of the 22R.
Some things you might run into are: A R150 tranny has the speedo cable on the other side. You'll have to fab a cable extension, EDIT: change out the speedo cable, or go w/o a speedo if you use this tranny.
And you might have to change the reverse sensor out to match your harness... no biggie...
And you might find the later in life RE 5 speeds have an electric speedo sensor... I have no idea about this but suspect it's an easy enough fix.

oh, and hey... tell me your diff ratio... or just give me the "axle" number.
I think 4 speed rears are higher than 5 speed
Sweet, considering the 4th to 5th drop is only 250rpm...
I need to double confirm this...
And another thing... Pretty sure a 2WD LWB has a 2piece driveshaft...
And I'm almost certain you won't need one. But don't take my word for it... Whatever you have, compare it to whatever you get it out of and you can even measure the tranny and see if they're the same...
Don't forget the slip yoke will make up for small amounts...
