What in the heck is this? 22R question

Circled in red is a tube with a flange coming from behind the engine. It's been this way since I bought the truck and the PO didn't know what it was for. All I know is blocking it or leaving it open has no impact upon how the engine runs (as far as I've been able to tell). I had originally thought it might have been part of an air conditioner, but my truck's never had A/C so that rules that out. Any ideas as to what it's supposed to be?

I believe that is part of the PAIR system. could be wrong, but I belive it's differet on a "R" versus "RE" model in that I remember it working it's way across the back and to under my EFI.

it's the egr tube on my truck. Since yours is a 22r i don't know if it makes any difference. On the exhaust side of my motor the tube has 2 outlets from the exhaust that connect to that piece. they then run behind the block to the egr then connecting to the back of the intake.

Hmmm, I'll have to take another look next time I get a chance, but I am pretty sure my exhaust manifold does NOT have the outlets as seen in your pictures, especially since I don't seem to have any exhaust leaks.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

e:Regardless, is this something that needs to be addressed if I find myself needing to get an e-test done?

Looks like I'm in the market for a header a little earlier than I was hoping. I really oughta just move and make my permanent address my farm instead of in the city, then I wouldn't have to get e-tests done and could worry about correcting this later on. Maybe whoever decided to ditch the cat on my truck decided to take that tube off too.

Funny thing though, googling for 22R and PAIR seems to give only results related to the 22RE, or points at this thread, can't seem to find anything related to just a plain old carbbed 22R.

I still don't get how having this disconnected doesn't seem to have a noticeable affect on the running of my engine.

ok, looking at your manifold, there are block plates installed where the tube to the PAIR system would normally be. I have circled them in yellow below. If you want to go the cheap route, go yank off the necessary tube at a pick-n-pull.

Emissions-wise, the ECM's on these trucks so rarely work properly that you will probably run cleaner de-smogged. However, depending on how strict they are on emissions inspections in your area, that stupid little tube may be on their visual checklist, as without it, your EGR doesn't have any EG to R...

I live in a no-smog county, which is rare in Cali. Once title is transfered, we don't ever need to smog check our vehicles again unless we sell them. I just completed a full de-smog on my 22-R, and it is awesome. I now have an unreal amount of room in my engine bay, and the truck runs significantly better.

I have a header without the PAIR ports..

I plan on using this kit when I install the header, unless I can find the tubes used for cheaper.

I don't think I'd worry too much about it.

BTW, the PAIR valve is identical from the 22-R to the 22-RE, any info you find still applies. It is making a difference in how your truck runs, you are probably getting another 1-2 MPG with it disconnected, and running a little warmer as well.

Yay! More stuff for me to buy from LCE in the coming months! If it weren't for the fact that Drive-Clean requires all vehicles to be at least 20 years old if built before 1987 (which these days means all of 'em) to not require emissions testing, and all vehicles from 1988 on to be at least 30 years old, I'd just rip off the rest of the EGR and be done with it. I bet when I get the PAIR hooked back up I'm going to find the rest of it's all crapped out, probably why it's blocked off atm. Then again, my truck doesn't have a cat either so maybe the PO blocked off the EGR and cut out the cat to get more out of the truck. Either way, this is going to cost me a lot of money if everything is ok, or a lot more money if not. Thank god it's tax return season.
