mysterious oil consumption

morning everyone,

here is my problem:
I can drive for over 600 miles not burning a drop of oil. Then on a random 120 mile trip i burn up to a quart or oil.
i have checked my timing and replaced the pcv valve and seal.

any other places i can check?

there are no leaks.

thanks in advance for your help!

does it smoke when you're driving it? smoke on a cold start? if you sit at a stoplight or something for a few minutes does it blow a puff of smoke when you go? compression? leak down test? what grade oil? MAybe try running a heavier weight oil in it... or add a bottle of lucas. whats your mileage? and oil in the coolant? Have you done any other work on the truck?

the only smoke on start up is black and smells of fuel.
no puffs of smoke when running at all.
i run 10-30 regular oil.
the motor has about 4000 miles on it so far after a full rebuild
no oil in coolant and not using any coolant.

i dont think it would have to do with piston rings because the consumtion is not regular or even. it will be fine for a period of time and then all of a sudden use a quart in no time.

only 4000 miles after a full rebuild?

the rings probably haven't seated all the way

I'm just barely over 6k on my rebuild, and it still burns

Mine didn't burn hardly any oil for the first 500 miles, then it burned about a quart the next 500 miles, then it went back to not burning much for the next 1000 miles, then it burned over 2 quarts withing 3k miles, lol, so mine's been very inconsistant too, and mine's not smoking at all either, but I can smell it sometimes.

I just swapped up to 15w40 to see if that'l help some

since were talking about rings, how did your rings look when you popped them out? I have 230,000 on a 22re that runs great but the headgasket is on its way (has blown randomly twice and has since sealed itself but its time for a new one) just wondering if i could get away with doing just the top end or if i should do a full rebuild like you guys did?
