milowilli's 1986 4Runner Build-Up Thread
I just found a 86 4Runner in not too bad condition and decided to take it on for a rebuild. I picked it up with trashed motor and transmission for $600bucks.... tried to get it for less but decided to go ahead as these trucks are hard to find around these parts. I have put the 89 Build on hold as this one needs less body work. This truck comes with an A340H transmission which i will be converting it to an A340F with an Inchworm Adapter. I decided to keep the Auto transmission and just upgrade it as I have a 1989 manual transmission 4runner which I am also rebuilding. The A340H is known as a very power robbing Transmission making the truck lazy. Its basically two Auto transmissions back to back. Toyota changed to the F transmissions on V6 motors in 96 and on the 22RE in 91. you can safely say that any 22RE before 90 had the A340H and any 3.0V6 3VZE Auto 4x4 had the A340H. Tacomas and 96 and newer 4Runners all have the A340F transmission.

Engine and tranny removal

A very tired A340H transmission ready for rebuild 534000miles

Worn out 22RE the #4 piston was broken, block, cam worn out. all oil seals leaking. 534000miles.

Rebuilt A340 transmission with inchworm adapter and gear driven transfer case off an 83 Pickup. I noticed that the tranny is now 4 inches longer so i will have shifter and drive shaft issues to deal .

1997 4x4 shifter from A340F tranny. This will be used with some modifications to the linkage which has to be moved over to the right side and shortened. Shift lock computer and wires removed to work with original 4 wire system(lamp and OD switch) of original shifter which does not have shift lock 4Wires spliced into original plug. Reused Shift lock..will hook up wires from solenoid to brake light switch.

Original A340H shifter

1997 shifter with console from a 1993 4runner/pickup 22RE with A340F transmission. the 97 shifter sits an inch higher so i will have to fill in the gap around the lower part of the console and lift the rear console. The shifter will have to be moved aft 3 inches as the transfer shifter has a 3 inch bend that will take care of the 4 inch longer tranny.

This is a work in progress. I will be ordering a rebuilt 22RE soon and start the build process..stay tuned.
