I have an 86 xtra cab and was thinking about swapping my cab onto a regular cab frame. I found a mint 91 reg cab frame local for cheap but am not sure if the front mounts will line up. I know that I will have to cut and weld the rear cab mounts, but the less welding and fabbing the better as I don't have a welder at my disposal. Thanks.

 

I know on 89-95 it won't work. The frames are longer right in the middle by the doors. This causes the curve up at the back to come sooner on a regular cab frame. The cab will hit the curve. I would assume the 84-88 trucks will have the same problem.

 

I'm running an 88 regular cab frame with with my 86 xtra cab. There are only 2 places that cause clearance issues- the front of the gas tank is a little close and the horsecollar crossmember will hit the floor. If u don't want to cut and weld the floor to get around that it is easily fixed with a 1.5" body lift. the front bed mount will need removed and the rear cab mount will have to be welded back near where the bed mount was. There are some similarities between the newer body styles but not sure if the cabs will fit without some serious mods. If I would have known then what I know now, I would've went with an 84 or 85 regular cab frame. the way the frame curves up over the axle and has a higher mounting point for the front springs lets you run a higer lift spring but keeps the total height down. (solid axles stock with those frames also)
