1986 toyota pickup

I just got a 1986 toyota pickup 4wd that has been handed down since being bought new by my grandpa. it made its way to my dad and now to me. I'm not worried about looks for now just want to build a good offroad capable truck. I am gonna need to rebuild the engine or maybe replace it with a newer engine with more horses (any recommendations would be great). I am a complete noob to building an offroad truck and would also like to know where to start. I'm thinking maybe lockers. The truck has the manual locking front hubs, not sure if this matters when it comes to what can be done. I am gonna be bringing the truck from Tennessee to Ventura county CA. so if someone knows of a good offroad place that does good work in the area feel free to make recommendations. Just a quick overview of the truck: 1986 toyota pickup regular cab, short bed. 250,000 miles. runs good but leaks some oil around various seals in engine. needs new tie rods and I think a new or rebuild clutch. Truck is totally stock down to those old white solid wheels.

What are your end goals for the truck? We need more info on what you want so we can tell you where to start.

end goals are to have a capable offroad truck for hitting the trails on the weekends. Gonna try to beef it up as much as possible thinking of something good for rock crawling and mudding. Prefer to be able to keep it worthy of interstate driving also though. just have a good 4x4 that is beefed up more than stock so its less likely to break something on the trails.

The truck is in tennessee right now, gonna go get it over the holidays hopefully bring it back out to cali if I can get the engine rebuilt or preferrably find a direct drop in engine with some more horsepower....I will try to get some pics up in the next few weeks when I get out to TN.
