Im in a hurry to get a new motor and was wondering the most recomended place to do that with out busting my wallet. I saw one on ebay for 695. I threw a rod over the weekend just driving down I95 doing 65 mph and BAM cylinder 4 popped out the drivers side of the block so i dont have a rebuildable core but that doesnt matter. Anyways....im in the central florida area and was wondering if someone local had one or if i should chance it on ebay. Its a 22RE. Thanks

 

Why is that I always hear about the 22RE throwing a rod? Is it due to no oil? I think it must be those aftermarket piston rod? I think I would try to patch that crack with some strong stuff and if everything inside is still in good condition I would rebuilt it. But don't know how much is the cost to get new parts for 22re. Maybe will cost the same as a whole engine you see in CL.

 

Check with the local boneyards, I bet they will be cheaper than eBay.

The hole is the size of my hand so its un fixable and im also on a limited time frame so rebuilding would take to long because i would now aslo have to find a core to rebuild. And its the original motor so aftermarket rods are also out of the question but a bad oil pump might be the problem. It has 160k and made no noise other than a little chain slap but it still runs even with only 3 cylinders so it cat be the chain. I did find this though...

others are as much as 400 a core. i already know im gona eat a core charge thats not a problem. I did find one 3 hours away at a junk yard for 700 with 113k on it out of an 88 p/u.

 

I'd buy the one out of the 88 pickup and swap it in.

It would be wise to do timing chain and whatnot on the '88 before dropping it in, but I think that's your best bet so far.

 

I agree go with the yards motor before you go e-bay the $650 22re sounds fishy......Also you might be able to find a motor exchange shop but you'll eat the core cost but at least its local and they typically have a short term warranty.....if the e-bay motor is crap its gonna be a SOB to get it right by freight. stay local IMO

 

well buddy, I was looking to buy a used one to drop in my truck temporarily while I rebuilt my original, and around here I could only find one... on a junk yard off HW50, down pass Bithlo... and they wanted $1000 for it with almost 200k miles on it... granted that's just getting broken in, lol, but I saved my $1000 and just rebuilt the motor and dealt with the down-time of the truck

I'm willing to bet that you could find a parts truck for cheaper than that with a running motor!

I don't know anybody off the top of my head that's selling one in the area though...


where at in the space coast are you? I use to live over in PSJ and then in Titusville; I just moved to Casselberry actually, and hope to be moving back to Titusville eventually

 

x2 on the donor truck with a running motor, if you plan on rebuilding it.

 

Im originaly from the island but i live in cocoa now Yea i found one in lake city off 75 up by I10 which is only 3 hours from brevard and it runs for 700 with 113k which i think ill go with tomorrow. I gota call him in the morn so he can yank it out of the truck while i drive up their.

 

I have olso heard that the 20r head is and upgrade for 22r but will it work with the 22re efi intake and 20r's are double row chains would that interfear also because their is a complete running 20r engine for 150 on craigs list right now

No.
You would have to run carb, the 20r was only carb.
People have gotten alot of grunt from the 20r/22r Hybrid though.
And the carb isn't as bad as people think it is.
It's much less complicated. No sensors, no electronics, just good ol' carburetor.

 

I plan to bolt up a 22RE intake to my 20R/22R hybrid motor in my 79


you can use a 20r head with an 22RE intake but it takes a bit if work to modify the head to get the 22re intake to "bolt up" google search it ......you may be better off gettting a 22RE block and head to keep from over complicating things

 

Well, the square ports to round ports issue is the first one that comes up.
Next, is the coolant passages.
He could save himself a ton of money by just buying a 22RE, or doing the 20r/22r hybrid with a carb.
I've been at some pretty "interesting" angles with my truck and haven't stalled it with a carb lol.

 

Thanks alot guys, im just gona get a all 22re in that case lol. Like i said im limited on time so thanks for making up my mind for me. Yea im just gona stick with the 700 dollar one i was talking about earlier. Its out of an 88 and it runs so im gona re chain it, clutch it, and re seal it with as many gaskets and seals as possible without spliting the head from the block. I think thats a pretty good plan....

 

and a new oil pump since thats why i think mine threw a rod with no warning
