Slack in rear axle

Slack in rear axle
Hi all, among other rear axle issues I am currently having I am also noticing a thud when I shift from Reverse to Drive. I thought it was u joints but it appears to be in the axle itself.
Anyone know how to tighten this up? Is there a big nut to tighten just behind where the driveshaft attaches to the axle like on my old landcruiser? If so happen to know the size of the nut? Thanks.

You don't just go and tighten that nut. It should be set by someone who knows what they're doing. If you think it needs to be adjusted take it to a pro. Sounds like your ring gear may be too far from the pinion gear. I woudl remove the 3rd member and have a looksy.

Thanks for the reply Al. I'm sure your right, I may end up taking the 3rd out and taking it to a shop. However, I did stumble across this page
http://www.gearinstalls.com/freshen.htm
Looks simple enough. Is this what I need to do next? Is what this guy is adjusting most likely the cause of the slack that I am noticing? Any other good links to 3rd member adjusting?
Thanks for the help guys.
