Weird thing happening 1987 toyota pickup

Well i have a 1987 toyota pickup with 22re. Was starting fine, but then all of sudden has hard time starting. It barely cranks over, and i had the battery tested with a load and it sup was fine. Then had the starter tested and that was fine. One weird thing is when its attempting to start, the power steering line from the pump to the steering box gets incredibly hot and starts smokeing and have no idea what would cause it. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the alternator is grounding through the power steering pump.

Don't laugh- the alternator ground is connected to the PS pump bracket (well, at least it was on my 91 and my 88) and the pressure line from the PS is steel braided....
... so maybe?

so what do you guys recommed a new ground strap from the engine to the body or run another ground for the alternator? Would this cause it hard to start, it cranks over one compression at a time slowly, but when it finally starts it runs fine.

hard to start, cranks slow....
If it's a voltage issue, that would be an issue around the battery- maybe the battery to the chassis or engine.
The alternator doesn't do much until the engine is running over 800 or so RPM's, but can still try to act as a ground....

Good move glad you found it you can never go to heavy i use #1 welding cable one to the inner fender one to the steel block.

Has cured a lot of electrical issues.
